Why do we lose hair?

THE NORMAL HAIR GROWTH CYCLE LASTS FROM 3 TO 7 YEARS. In an alopecic cycle, the growth period lasts from 10 to 15 months.

CAUSES OF ALOPECIA: environmental factors, a 5% of the factors are physical, chemical, mechanical and hormonal (hypothyroidism), deficient and unbalanced feeding, emotional disorders.

Androgenetic Alopecia: it represents a 95% of the causes of alopecia and it mainly affects men over women. The alopecic areas in men (‘male pattern baldness’) present a typical distribution: the vertex area (crown), receding hairlines and -in severe cases- they stretch to the back of the head covering also the temporal and occipital areas. The DNA in the follicular cells of these areas does not have the genetic information it needs to synthesize the 5-a reductase, which is the enzyme that transforms the testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). The DHT alters the normal hair cycle, which shortens considerably to 15 months (normal length: from 3 to 7 years) causing the new hair to grow thinner and thinner as a result of the progressive degeneration of the follicle. Eventually, it suffers a complete atrophy and as a consequence, hair disappears altogether.
